Using satellite data to find endangered cultural heritage
Researchers use Earth Observation data and spatial technologies to protect endangered cultural soilscapes in the Levant, threatened by climate change and conflict.

Stargo's Stardox can transform satellite data into actionable insights, aiding in the preservation of cultural heritage sites.
Executive Summary
Researchers use Earth Observation data and spatial technologies to study and protect endangered cultural soilscapes in the post-conflict Levant. Climate change, erosion, urbanisation, agricultural activity, conflict, and political instability threaten cultural heritage. The EU-funded SIGNATURE project aims to reveal new archaeological sites obscured by recent agricultural encroachment and land disturbances. By integrating satellite-based legacy data, geoarchaeological analysis, and high-performance computational workflows, the project identifies and characterises archaeological remains in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley and Jordan’s River Valley, creating essential records of archaeological locations documented before conflicts.
