At period end, the controller is often waiting on unresolved reconciliations, late journal approvals, and supporting evidence scattered across email and spreadsheets. The financial-close orchestration workflow may span the general ledger, subledgers, ERP instances, business units, and reviewers—yet its progress remains difficult to see. Why financial-close orchestration still breaks down
Close performance remains a material operational issue. The APQC cross-industry benchmark reports a median monthly financial-close cycle of 8.0 days across 3,303 observations. That is a benchmark of current cycle time—not an automation target or expected benefit.
A separate, commercially sponsored SAPinsider study of 108 SAP finance and accounting community members, surveyed from August 2024 through January 2025, found that financial-statement review and finalization took more than nine days on average. It also found that 55% cited pressure to reduce manual and repetitive accounting work, up from 37% in the 2023 survey.
The problem is not simply a long task list. Information arrives in different forms and at different levels of readiness:
- ERP, general-ledger, and subledger records provide structured transaction data.
- Reconciliation files and spreadsheets contain calculations, mappings, and adjustments.
- Emails, approval messages, and supporting documents carry evidence and decisions.

Faster cannot mean less controlled
Close orchestration must accelerate routine work without bypassing accounting judgment or authorization. Period-end journals, intercompany differences, and unusual adjustments require more—not less—visibility.
January 2025 PCAOB staff guidance on journal entries highlights period-end and post-closing entries, unreconciled differences, and intercompany transactions as areas requiring consideration during testing. This means automation should preserve the source record, validation result, approval decision, exception history, and posting status. High-confidence routine items can move forward under policy; incomplete, conflicting, or unusual items should enter a controlled review queue.

Measure the workflow, not just the close date
