Embracing Digital Transformation in the Logistics Industry
Discover why digital transformation is crucial for the logistics industry and how embracing new technologies can lead to improved efficiency and competitiveness.

Manifest 2022 is set to take place from January 25 to 27 this year. As one of the largest annual conferences revolving around pressing issues and current affairs in transport and logistics, Manifest always offers a diverse range of keynote speakers, all discussing the state of the logistics industry. This year looks to be no exception, covering some fascinating and (in some cases) urgent issues we're all facing in the freighting world.
One of the points of discussion on the agenda particularly resonated with me, as it's a topic I've written about in the past: embracing digital transformation within the transport and logistics industry.
With the world changing at such a rapid pace, customer expectations are constantly evolving. If we don't keep up with the current pace of change we risk losing our clients and customers to competitors who can keep up.
The Need for Digitalization Within the Logistics Industry
In terms of digital development and deployment of digital capabilities, the logistics industry still lags behind compared to other industries. In the pre-COVID era, most businesses within shipping and logistics relied largely on manual methods and systems that were inefficient or out-of-date or used disconnected digital systems that created cumbersome data silos.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world, the logistics industry was not sufficiently prepared for the challenges of running and overseeing operations through lockdowns and isolation, as well as the strain that the supply chain would take. Large parts of the global supply chain broke down as a result.
However, these unexpected disruptions highlighted the clear and crucial need for digital transformation within shipping and logistics, and we can use the lessons learned during the pandemic to reform our methods and processes to be more agile and reactive in the future.
Technologies Disrupting Shipping and Logistics
Disruptive technologies molded by digital transformation and primed for end-to-end supply chain efficiency are reshaping traditional working relationships within the logistics industry. But rather than "disrupting" the order of the logistics industry, these novel technologies are helping to guide the industry towards some much-needed evolution.
Cloud-based platforms and tools that leverage data through AI and machine learning offer supply chain businesses a simpler, easier means of tracking and managing their operations from beginning to end.
These digital tools also benefit the customers on the front end. Ease of access, clear, updated pricing and information, and data-driven order and shipment updates in near-real-time allow businesses to offer their clients a more seamless customer experience and create more customer-centric business models.
How Supply Chain Players Can Embrace and Utilize Digitalization In Their Processes
For businesses who want to remain competitive, digitizing their operational processes will help them rise to the challenge of providing simpler, faster service to their customers without compromising on quality or attention to detail. However, they also need to capitalize on the opportunities that disruptive tools and technologies offer.
Some platforms and services digitize the customer experience, some streamline operations, while others facilitate simpler partnership creation and management between supply chain businesses. Businesses, no matter their positioning on the supply chain, can leverage digital transformation, and the capabilities that have emerged thanks to it, to optimize and improve their front and back-end services.
Conclusion
Digital transformation is happening in the logistics industry whether we're ready for it or not, and if we don't accept these changes to our processes, we're going to end up playing catch up to our competitors. We need to embrace digital tools and methods in our operations or risk becoming irrelevant and obsolete.
