The paper explores the evolution in roadway design to meet autonomous vehicle demands, focusing on V2X communications, precision control, and connectivity.

Stargo's Stardox can transform unstructured data into actionable insights for autonomous vehicle infrastructure design.
Executive Summary
The introduction of autonomous vehicles (AVs) on our roads necessitates a fundamental change in how we design highways. Current design guidelines cater exclusively to human drivers. This paper explores the necessary evolution in roadway design to meet the demands of AVs. A critical consideration is how to maintain traditional human-centric designs while accommodating the needs of AVs to establish a ‘safe for all’ design philosophy. This review focuses on autonomous driving technologies such as Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications, precision control, continuous sensor input, and connectivity. It examines the essential transformations required in road infrastructure to support autonomous driving, covering topics from geometric features to the integration of digital twins. The paper also addresses ongoing research, challenges, and strategies for adapting highway infrastructure. Lastly, recommendations are made for amending or supplementing design guidelines and standards to effectively accommodate AVs.
